As veterans in the fire service, we’re constantly inspired by the dedication and resilience of firefighters and the communities they serve. This past month has been a significant one for both Emergent and Emergency Technical Decon (ETD) as we continue to drive forward initiatives that protect firefighter health, enhance operational efficiency, and foster innovation within the fire service.
Key Learnings and Insights in the Fire Service
The fire service is at a crossroads, with new challenges and opportunities shaping the way departments approach safety, technology, and health. From the growing adoption of data-driven decision-making to heightened awareness around cancer prevention, we’re seeing a shift toward proactive solutions that prioritize long-term well-being for firefighters.
The ongoing fires in California over the past month have been a stark reminder of the immense risks firefighters face, both in the moment and long after the flames are extinguished. Events like these highlight the critical need for fire departments to adopt the latest tools and practices to protect their teams. Harnessing real-time data to track exposures and operational demands, combined with ensuring turnout gear is properly cleaned and decontaminated, are essential steps in reducing long-term health risks like cancer. Departments that embrace innovative solutions, such as advanced telemetry systems and NFPA 1851-compliant decontamination methods, can create safer, more resilient environments for their firefighters—ensuring that those who put their lives on the line are equipped and protected to face the challenges of today and tomorrow.
Launching the Turnout for Firefighters Cancer Research Fund
On January 22, we were thrilled to officially launch the Turnout for Firefighters Cancer Research Fund*, a partnership between the V Foundation for Cancer Research, Emergency Technical Decon, and Emergent. This initiative underscores our commitment to addressing one of the most pressing issues facing the fire service: the increased risk of cancer due to carcinogen exposure. At the recent TEEX Leadership Development Symposium, we had the opportunity to engage with industry leaders to discuss how this foundation is making strides in helping fund cancer research while emphasizing the importance of prevention, education, and proactive measures to reduce firefighter exposure to carcinogens.
This fund focuses on both prevention and research, ensuring firefighters are protected not only through better tools and practices but also through innovative research into detection and treatment. By pairing Emergent’s data-driven capabilities with ETD’s advanced decontamination solutions, we’re creating a comprehensive approach to reduce exposure risks and support firefighters' long-term health.
The Role of Data and Education in Driving Change
One of the most powerful tools in preventing firefighter cancer is data. By tracking exposure to carcinogens, monitoring gear usage, and ensuring proper cleaning protocols are followed, departments can take proactive steps to protect their crews. Education is equally critical—raising awareness within the fire service about the importance of preventative measures and fostering the adoption of new technologies and practices.
We’ve seen firsthand how departments that embrace innovation can create safer environments for their teams. Whether it’s implementing advanced telemetry systems, such as Emergent or adopting NFPA 1851-compliant cleaning methods as found with Emergency Technical Decon, these steps are helping to drive a cultural shift within the industry—one that values prevention as much as response.
Looking Ahead
As we move forward, our focus remains clear: support the fire service through tools, education, and partnerships that make a meaningful impact. The Turnout for Firefighters Cancer Research Fund is just one example of how collaboration and innovation can address the most critical challenges firefighters face.
We’re proud to stand alongside firefighters, researchers, and communities in this mission. Together, we can reduce risks, improve outcomes, and ensure that every firefighter has the resources they need to stay safe and healthy—both on and off the job.
